Aerial photography of the Isle
of Man Airport
Drone flying is
prohibited within 5 Km of the Isle of Man Airport at Ronaldsway
(Restriction of Flying
(Isle of Man Airport) Regulations 2018)

So how did I legally
take the following pictures? Firstly I needed written permission
from the IOM Civil Aviation Authority to fly within the 5 Km Restricted
Zone.
The proposed flights
were discussed with Air Traffic Control at Ronaldsway and it was agreed
that they would take place when the airport was confirmed closed.
I carried out a Risk
Assessment and produced a custom pre-flight checklist to ensure that the
airport was in fact closed before any flight took place,
that Airport Security
were aware of my flights and that they would notify me of any 'out of hours'
openings.
The Phantom 4 Pro drone
used is also subject to Geofencing which would normally prevent it flying
so close to the airport and I had to present all of the
authorizing paperwork
to DJI before they would issue me with a time limited 'Unlock Code' allowing
me to fly these missions.
I've made quite a few
references on the individual photo pages to historical aspects of the airport
at Ronaldsway.
More information on
many of them can be found in my ATC History
Pages on this website.
